The Electric Power Group is located in the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford.
This is a growing group led by Dr Malcolm McCulloch.
There are two main areas of research : the sustainable use of energy and high temperature superconductors in electrical machines.
The sustainable use of energy is an issue of great concern, especially in light of global warming. The group is actively engaged in providing technical expertise in the development of hydrogen based cars. It is also developing technologies to help the domestic market reduce their energy needs. We have recently been involved in Changing the Climate.
The group's research effort in HTS has been on developing an understanding on how to best optimise the use of high temperature superconductors for use in electrical machines. To this end we have a two pronged approach: firstly to develop modelling tools and secondly to develop protoypes.
